Done through the morning in goofy sets of a few here, and a few there.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Done in office yet again, one set of 10, one set of 18. I think I did one extra one. Meh, I won't bank it forward.

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Done in office. Sets of 10, 10, 7. Sets of 10 are where it is at for me.

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Done in office, sets fo 10 and 16. The set of 16 was tough. I am thinking sets of 10 from here on out.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Done is office as usual, sets of 10, 8, 7.

Monday, January 26, 2009

Done in office, as usual, in three sets of 8.

Sunday, January 25, 2009

Done in living room after running a 10k. Smarted, it did. In addition, I burned my hand yesterday, making the pushups a bit harder. I will overcome.

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Done at work, split into 10, 6, 6. I needed to split them up after that insane 21 in a row yesterday.

Friday, January 23, 2009

In the office again, this time in a row. Tiring.

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Done in office, broken up into 6, 6, 8. Things are definitely getting more interesting now. I can certainly see improvement in the core and arms.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Did in office again. I had dress clothes on today, so I only did 2 at a time, so as not to start sweating. Did them over several hours. Man they really hurt in dress shoes.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Did at work first thing. I did a set of 10, did some other stuff, then the last 8. Love it.

Monday, January 19, 2009

Done at work again. It is starting to get much more challenging cardio-wise now.

Sunday, January 18, 2009

Did these in the hotel room at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. I also did one in the shallow kiddie pool just so I could say I did one in the water. My wife thinks I am crazy. She did hers today too, I am so proud of that woman. But she wouldn't do one in the water with me.

The second dullest blog ever rolls on! 15 done at work first thing, great way to start the day. Wife still doing them too, which makes me very happy!

Friday, January 16, 2009

Did them at work again, getting the blood pumping on this soooo cold day. -20 this morning, fresh air! But I didn't do them outside. I actually did 13, then looked at this blog and remembered that I needed to do one more, so I did it. Funny, this blog is starting to remind me of the dullest blog in the world.

Thursday, January 15, 2009

For some reason my body didn't want to do them today. Probably because my legs are a little sore from sparring last night. Anyway, I fought through it and got them done, in a row. At this level you can really feel the cardio. A wonderful way to start the day.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Did these in the office with dress clothes on. Definitely getting the heart pumping now. I can tell that it is starting to do good though. The low numbers of burpees are much easier. It was tougher with dress shoes on than tennis shoes.

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Done in office again. It is actually a pretty good way to start the day, getting the blood pumping. I suppose I will be saying something different when I start getting up in numbers, but for now, it's all good.

Monday, January 12, 2009

Done in office. Definitely starting to get up there in cardio when done in a row.

Sunday, January 11, 2009

Done after a five mile run on the treadmill. My legs are very sore from Muay Thai sparring, but so it goes. The higher numbers of burpees are going to hurt, I get the feeling. I did all 9 in a row, but needed to catch my breath a bit after them. I wonder when the numbers start to pile up how I will need to split them up.

The Devil Is In The Details

I have been doing a bit of YouTubing - checking people out who are also doing the 100 Burpee Challenge. It appears that some are doing burpees differently. I adhere to the rules on this page.

What I am mostly seeing in videos are people who are combining the action of kicking the legs out and the down portion of the pushup. In other words it looks sort of like a sprawl. In my burpees I tend to separate the actions.

1. squat
2. kick legs out
3. do a good pushup with good form
4. legs in
5. jump

What I see a lot of people do is this.

1. jump up
2. come down with legs out and in "down" pushup position
3. push up and jump up

Here is an example:

I am not saying the person in the video above isn't doing a good job at getting exercise, I am saying that I don't think that he is getting the full value of a good burpee, especially the pushup part - and us guys want nice big solid shoulders, arms and pecs.

The FIRST people in the video below are doing them the way I am, separating the movements somewhat. Note the woman drops her knees, as my wife is in her modification since she doesn't have the upper body strength to do standard pushups.

My .02 on burpees.

Did them in the office. After about six or so the blood is really pumping. This is going to be a great challenge to get all the way through to 100. I am up for it.

Also, keeping the head up during the pushups is helping with the blood rush thing.

It is much harder to do the burpees in jeans, tennis shoes and a shirt.

Did them at home after work. Wife had to do the 7, plus make up for the six she forgot to do yesterday. Watching her do them gave me great pleasure.

Thursday, January 8, 2009

Done in office again. Again, tough with tennis shoes and jeans on. But better than yesterday, keeping my head a little more upright to avoid the blood rush to the cranium. Road trip this weekend, I hope I don't miss a day, but can always make them up the next day.

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Again done at work in the office. I notice that blood rushes to my head a bit while doing them. Will have to work on technique a bit to avoid that in the future.

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Did them at work again. Not easy with jeans and tennis shoes on. The wife says she is in on the challenge with me, but can't do regular pushups - so she is doing the girly ones with her knees on the floor. Fine with me, I am happy she is going to try it.

Monday, January 5, 2009

Did them in my office at work. Reminder for next time - take off communication device from belt before doing burpees.

If He Can Do It, I Can Do It

This guy is doing it in IRAQ, under challenging conditions. There is no reason I can't do it here.

He is in the middle of it right now. Good luck to him.

Did them in my living room. I can tell that as the total gets higher this is going to get a lot tougher.

Saturday, January 3, 2009

As of today I am starting the 100 Burpee challenge. This is the page of rules I am following. And I will follow all of them. I would like to thank Santa Cruz Crossfit for putting that page up on the web.

I have one exception. Or two. If I am doing burpees in my basement, I can't really jump too high without hitting my hands or head. So I will just jump as high as practical. If I am on the road at a hotel and no easy access to a workout room, I will make do with the hotel room and do the burpees to the best of my ability.

This blog is my way of keeping myself honest - I really don't want to fail so will be jotting a quick note or two here every day as to how I did. Things won't get tough until day 10 or so I would think, but I am in pretty good shape and think I can do it. I will probably do video on the tens. And speaking of video, here is number one.

As the videos get longer I will probably start using YouTube. Also, I will more than likely only tape the last half or so of the longer sets as this thing goes along. I have no idea how long the burpees will take me, but am limited by YouTube's upload time and the memory card on my camera. We will see on that.
